A Man in Death’s Shadow
When I felt Death’s cold deep shadow,
When I felt the sickly murder of the sun, cold
Darkness pricking skin,
When I looked and saw this uncouth form,
Rising black, a sickle high o’er me,
When I in this valley tread in Death’s wake,
How quickly I forgot the sun,
And its warmth,
But, rising over all, emblazoning the sky
a moonlight came, vision of a sun,
Rising over all, a rod and staff overtook the sky,
Sigils of my safety and protection,
But, rising over all, light’s impression…stabbing through the blank black sky,
a table before me, a supper before enemies,
Rising over all, a Son, healing in his cross,
courage in his hands,
and light upon his brow.
